Classroom Supplies That All Elementary School Teachers Need To Keep On Hand
Even though you send home school supply lists every year, there are always some children who don't have all of the needed supplies, or the children in your class use the supplies faster than you thought they would. Because of this, it's important that you have additional supplies on hand throughout the year.
Elementary school classes use everything from Number 2 pencils and colored pencils to crayons and glue to complete different assignments and projects each day. Some teachers require each child to have his or her own box of supplies, while others use the supplies brought in by students at the beginning of the year as supplies for the entire class. Regardless of which option you prefer, you should keep extra:
- Colored pencils
- Bottled glue or glue sticks
Germ control is essential in elementary school classrooms. When you have 20 to 30 students in your class every single day, germs can spread quickly. In order to prevent yourself and your entire class from getting sick multiple times during the school year, keep hand sanitizer, tissues, paper towels, and a naturally based spray cleanser in your classroom. If you work with older school-age children, the type of cleaner you use won't matter as much because the kids are old enough to know not to drink it. However, if you work with younger kids, it's probably best to choose a cleaner that isn't filled with dangerous chemicals.
If you have classroom computers or your students frequently use laptops in the classroom, you should have a supply of cheap classroom headphones on your storage cabinet. This way, you don't have to deal with the sound of multiple computers at the same time. Alternatively, you can choose computer activities without sound; however, you'll be limiting the type of computer activities that your students can enjoy because a lot of teachers use computer-based educational games, most of which talk the children through the task, to help their students focus on specific subjects. Because teachers typically have to purchase additional classroom supplies themselves, you should try to pick up a few sets of cheap classroom headphones throughout the year whenever you see them on sale to save money.
Ideally every student would have enough school supplies to last him or her throughout the school year, and teachers wouldn't have to be responsible for ensuring the kids have the supplies they need to learn. Unfortunately, that isn't a realistic expectation, but by keeping some basic supplies, sanitary supplies, and extra headphones on hand you can have a successful, productive school year.
